President John Hennessy formed the commission in 2004 to study possible enhancements to graduate education at Stanford. The commission presented its report to the Faculty Senate in December and made a number of recommendations to enhance multidisciplinary opportunities, expand leadership training and break down institutional barriers to encourage collaboration among departments.

Hennessy announced recently that the university would adopt the commission's recommendation to create the position of vice provost for graduate education to oversee many of the reforms. The university also has approved the development of three new pilot programs for graduate students that incorporate some of the recommendations of the commission.
