Claude Steele to direct behavioral sciences center

Claude M. Steele, the Lucie Stern Professor in the Social Sciences, has been appointed director of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, effective Sept. 1. Steele, a fellow at the center in 1994-95 and a center trustee since 2002, has taught at Stanford since 1991. He is a past chair of the Psychology Department. Throughout his career, Steele has been interested in how people cope with threats to their self-image. He also has studied addictive behaviors. Steele earned a bachelor's degree from Hiram College and a doctorate from Ohio State University. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2003.
