Scientists, politicians and reporters were given a rare tour of the EarthScope San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth (SAFOD) in Parkfield, Calif., on Sept. 2. Drilling of the observatory began last June. When completed, SAFOD will cross the fault about 2 miles underground and provide a unique opportunity to monitor seismic events within an active earthquake zone. Stanford geophysicist Mark Zoback, principal investigator of SAFOD, and co-principal investigators William Ellsworth and Stephen Hickman of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) describe the project and its objectives.
