PATRICK SUPPES, the Lucie Stern Professor of Philosophy, Emeritus, is the first recipient of the CHF20,000 Lauener Prize ($16,000), awarded by the Lauener Foundation for Analytical Philosophy. The prize, given for Suppes’ body of published work, was awarded at the University of Bern in Switzerland on Sept. 9.

RON GUTMAN, an MBA candidate at the Graduate School of Business, and UTKAN DEMIRCI, an electrical engineering doctoral candidate in the School of Engineering, won the Global Startup Competition in Singapore on Oct. 12. The competition brought together 20 teams from universities worldwide to vie for the best business plan. Gutman and Demirci’s plan aimed to create a company that uses Demirci’s doctoral work and a Stanford-patented technology to produce devices for generating microdroplets for semiconductor manufacture and drug testing and design.
