Edward Lazear, the Jack Steele Parker Professor of Human Resources Management and Economics, received the PhD Faculty Distinguished Service Award May 26 from the Business School's doctoral students.
In honoring him, students cited Lazear's "openness to new ideas and willingness to allow his students to embark on new research projects far away from the research mainstream and far from his areas of research." This willingness to support unorthodox research enhances academic freedom, the glue that holds the program together, said the nominators.
This is the second year the Stanford
Business School PhD Association has awarded this honor. In an
attempt to recognize the exceptional effort put forth by faculty,
the award recognizes the faculty member who, through teaching
and/or advising, has made exceptional contributions to the
intellectual development of the school's doctoral student
