Gibbons, Harris and Plummer awarded with Third Millennium Medals for work in electrical engineering

James Gibbons, the Reid Weaver Dennis Professor of Electrical Engineering; James Harris, the James and Elenor Chesebrough Professor in the School of Engineering; and James Plummer, the Frederick Emmons Terman Dean of the School of Engineering, have been awarded Third Millennium Medals by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Gibbons was recognized for pioneering research leading to the development of both ion implantation and rapid thermal processing as essential technologies for semiconductor device fabrication. Harris was cited for innovations in gallium arsenide devices used in optical networks and cellular telephones. Plummer received the award for outstanding contributions to the field of silicon devices and technology.
