Cowell offers dental care: 9/30/98

Cowell to offer dental care for students

Cowell Student Health Service has arranged to bring dental services to campus to meet students' comprehensive dental care needs. On-Site Dental Care Inc., a company providing on-site dental care to a number of Silicon Valley companies, will bring its mobile facilities to Stanford. The same dentist and office staff will be on campus every Wednesday and Thursday, starting Oct. 1. The self-contained dental office will be parked adjacent to Cowell Student Health Service across Campus Drive from Wilbur Field.

Services will include all aspects of comprehensive general dental care. On-Site's mobile dental facility uses a digital X-ray, intra-oral camera for diagnostic purposes and offers patients nitrous oxide, earphones, television and virtual reality goggles to watch movies.

Services will be offered on a fee-for-service basis. Students will receive discounts from the regular fee schedule, and many insurance programs are accepted. Appointments may be made by calling 322-2300. For further information, contact On Site Dental Care at their website, www.onsite-dental.com/.

Responding to students' requests, last year Cowell investigated the possibility of adding dental coverage to Cardinal Care, the university's student health insurance plan. This effort was unsuccessful, due to the high cost of dental benefits. "We were able to arrange for On-Site to bring its mobile dental services on campus," said Ira M. Friedman, M.D., director of Cowell. "We hope that making dental care more accessible with discounted fees will encourage students to use these needed services." SR
