Dr. Luby’s research interests include identifying and interrupting pathways of infectious disease transmission in low-income countries. He works primarily in Bangladesh, but also has projects in western China and Liberia. His ongoing work includes 1) assessing the impact on health and child cognitive development of scalable strategies to improve water, sanitation and hygiene; 2) efforts to better understand the burden of disease from typhoid fever and evaluating approaches to reduce that burden; 3) developing and evaluating interventions to reduce the risk of a Nipah virus pandemic; and 4) evaluating the impact of the Bangladesh national vaccine program on the burden of pneumococcal and Haemophilus influenzae type B infection.
