James Fishkin is the director of Stanford’s Center for Deliberative Democracy and known for his America in One Room project, which brought together 500 American voters from across the ideological spectrum to learn about and discuss major issues of the 2020 presidential election. He is the author of Democracy When the People Are Thinking.

He is best known for developing Deliberative Polling® – a practice of public consultation that employs random samples of the citizenry to explore how opinions would change if they were more informed. Fishkin and his collaborators have conducted Deliberative Polls in the United States, Britain, Australia, Denmark, Bulgaria, China, Greece and other countries.
