GSB's William Beaver named to Accounting's Hall of Fame

STANFORD William H. Beaver, a Stanford Graduate School of Business professor whose work opened the door to capital market research in accounting, has been inducted into the American Accounting Association's Hall of Fame.

Beaver, 56, is an award-winning teacher and a leading researcher in financial accounting. "Bill Beaver is a superb role model for academicians," said his friend Stanford Professor Charles R. Horngren, who presented the award at the association's annual meeting in Chicago in August. "He is a trailblazer in research. His amazing productivity and sophistication continue to flourish."

Beaver's early published papers are on accounting measures as financial predictors of failure. His security price research led to empirical work for accounting researchers. He has published more than 60 papers and two editions of the widely read book Financial Reporting: An Accounting Revolution. For more than 30 years, his insight and enthusiasm in accounting research have been a powerful influence in both academe and practice.

Stanford MBA students have honored him with their annual award for distinguished teaching in the classroom. At the same time, Beaver has channeled much of his energy into Ph.D. guidance. His cultivation of the next generation in financial research has created a cadre of young academics who are now his colleagues at Stanford and elsewhere.

Beaver graduated magna cum laude from the University of Notre Dame in 1962. He earned his MBA and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago's Graduate School of Business, where he joined the faculty in 1965. In 1969, he joined the Stanford Graduate School of Business as an associate professor, and currently is the Joan E. Horngren Professor of Accounting.

Beaver is a Certified Public Accountant, and his contributions to his profession include serving as consultant to the Financial Accounting Standards Board, member of the Securities and Exchange Commission Advisory Committee and trustee of the Financial Accounting Foundation, and extensive service on editorial review boards.

He is the only person to have received all five of the American Accounting Association's professional honors: AAA President, AAA-AICPA Outstanding Contribution to Accounting Literature Award (three times), Distinguished International Visiting Lecturer, Outstanding Educator Award and the Seminal Contribution to Accounting Literature Award.
