1996 Stegner Fellows in Poetry and Fiction announced

STANFORD -- The Stegner Creative Writing Program has selected five poets and five fiction writers as Stegner Fellows for 1996. Each writer receives a two-year fellowship that provides tuition and an annual living stipend of $15,000.

More than 1,000 writers from the United States, Europe, Canada, South Korea, West Africa and India applied for the fellowships this year.

The new Fellows in Poetry:

• Susan Phillips Hutton, from Ann Arbor, Mich., completed her B.A. in English at Kalamazoo College prior to receiving her M.F.A. in poetry from the University of Michigan. She has published articles and essays in Detroit magazines and in American Writing.
• Joy Katz, of St. Louis, Mo., received a B.S. in industrial design from Ohio State University and an M.F.A. in poetry writing from Washington University. Her work has been published in The Literary Review and The Pittsburgh Quarterly.
• David McCombs, of Chicago, has an A.B. in English from Harvard and an M.F.A. in poetry from the University of Virginia-Charlottesville. His work has been featured in Best American Poetry 1995, no roses review and Columbia Poetry Review.
• Leigh Palmer, of Wytheville, Va., received a B.A. in English from the University of Virginia, an M.F.A. in creative writing from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro and an M.A. in English from the University of Virginia. Palmer's work has appeared in the New England Review and The Origins of Free Verse.
• Katherine Whitcomb-Nelson, of St. Paul, Minn., earned a B.A. in English from Macalaster College and an M.F.A. in poetry writing from Vermont College. Her poetry was published in the 1995 Grolier Poetry Prize Annual.

The five Fellows in Fiction:

• Jason Brown, of Ithaca, N.Y., earned a B.A. from Bowdoin College and an M.F.A. from Cornell. He has published in Tri Quarterly and Georgia Review, and is a recipient of the Mississippi Review Fiction Prize.
• Michael Byers received his B.A. from Oberlin College and currently is completing his M.F.A. in fiction at the University of Michigan. His work has appeared in Missouri Review, Indiana Review, American Short Fiction and Prairie Schooner.
• Eddie Chuculate is currently attending the Creative Writing Program at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe. His work has been published in Weber Studies.
• Goldberry Long received her B.A. in evolutionary theory/anthropology and her M.A in English and creative writing from New Mexico State University. She completed an M.F.A. at the University of Iowa Writers Workshop.
• Ryan Harty has a B.A. in English from the University of California-Berkeley and an M.F.A. from the University of Iowa. He has published in the Santa Monica Review and Playboy.
