STANFORD -- More than 900 parents, grandparents and siblings of Stanford students are expected to participate in Parents' Weekend 1996, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, March 1-2.
Parents and other relatives are invited to spend two days getting a firsthand look at what Stanford students do at their "home away from home." Families will have the opportunity to meet with residence staff, attend classes taught by Stanford professors and take tours of the campus.
Registration begins at 8 a.m. Friday in the Oak Room of Tresidder Union. That morning, tours of the main campus, the Rodin Sculpture Garden, outdoor art on campus, Memorial Church, the Stanford libraries and the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center are offered.
President Gerhard Casper will welcome the parents and other relatives at 10:30 a.m. in Memorial Auditorium. Parents will get a chance to ask questions of the president during this informal session.
Friday afternoon, parents have nine classes from which to choose; each will be held twice, from 2:15 to 3:05 p.m., and from 3:15 to 4:05 p.m. Participating Stanford faculty include Anne Fernald, psychology; Luis Fraga, political science; Joss Marsh, English; Jody Maxmin, art and classics; Marsh McCall, classics; Brad Osgood, mathematics; Elisabeth Paté-Cornell, industrial engineering; Mary Pratt, Spanish and Portuguese; Channing Robertson, chemical engineering; Renato Rosaldo, anthropology; and Paul Wender, chemistry.
The parents are invited to receptions in the residences from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. to meet with resident fellows and resident assistants.
On Saturday, a panel featuring students talking about choosing majors and performing undergraduate research will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in Memorial Auditorium. After the panel, from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., a number of student performing arts groups will entertain the parents, also in Memorial Auditorium.
To round out the weekend, the parents can see a number of Stanford student-athletes in action. The women's tennis team plays UC-Santa Barbara Friday at 1:30 p.m., and the women gymnasts host Arizona State at 7 p.m. On Saturday, both men's and women's track and field teams compete against Fresno State and Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo (all day), women's lacrosse hosts Vermont at 1 p.m., and the women's basketball team hosts Berkeley at Maples Pavilion at 7 p.m.
The weekend costs $22 per person, with a maximum amount charged of $60 per family.
