Law School graduates appointed to judicial clerkships

STANFORD -- Thirty-six members of the Stanford Law School's Class of 1993 are serving in judicial clerkships during the 1993-94 term. In addition, nine graduates of previous classes are currently in clerkships, including six at the United States Supreme Court.

A law clerk's duties typically include conducting legal research and helping draft opinions on court cases.

Of the 36 new graduates in clerkships, 18 are serving on U.S. district courts, 13 on U.S. appeals courts, two on state supreme courts, one at the Supreme Court of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and two on county superior courts.

U.S. Supreme Court clerkships

Six graduates - one from the Class of 1990, one from the Class of 1991 and four from the Class of 1992 - are currently serving in clerkships at the U.S. Supreme Court:

Following graduation, Alexander clerked for Chief Judge Abner J. Mikva, U.S. Court of Appeals, District of Columbia.

A former senior article editor for the Stanford Law Review, he earned the 1988-89 Jay M. Spears Award for outstanding service to the journal. No stranger to the high court, Baxter served as a clerk for Justice William J. Brennan during the 1991-92 term. In 1992-93, Baxter served an initial clerkship with Ginsburg, who was then a judge with the U.S. Court of Appeals, District of Columbia.

Miles F. Ehrlich '92, of Sacramento, Calif., is clerking for Justice Anthony M. Kennedy. Upon graduation from Stanford Law School, Ehrlich was named the Nathan Abbott Scholar for earning the highest cumulative grade point average in his class. Ehrlich was also awarded the School's first- and second-year honors for the highest average in each of his first two years of law school; a Hilmer Oehlmann Jr. Prize for outstanding work in the first-year Research and Legal Writing Program; and second-place recognition in the 1990-91 Frank Baker Belcher Evidence competition.
