Jazz workshop celebrates Dizzy Gillespie's 75th

STANFORD -- The Stanford Jazz Workshop will honor jazz great Dizzy Gillespie's 75th birthday by presenting Gillespie's Diamond Jubilee at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15.

The event will be held in Frost Amphitheater. Tickets are $20 for the lawn, $24 for chair seating. Gates open at 12:30.

More than 25 musicians, from jazz legends to young masters, are scheduled to appear. They include Milt Jackson, Freddie Hubbard, James Moody, Hank Jones, Red Rodney, Jimmy Heath, Sweets Edison, Giovanni Hidalgo, Ignacio Berroa, Steve Turre and Danilo Perez.

The program highlighting Gillespie's works will showcase a number of musical combinations, including the Bebop All-Stars, the Latin All-Stars and the United Nations Orchestra. Due to recent surgery, Gillespie is not expected to attend the event.
