Annual Ragtime Ball set for Nov. 16

STANFORD -- The third annual Ragtime Ball, sponsored by Friends of Dance at Stanford, will be held from 8 p.m. to midnight, Saturday, Nov. 16, in Roble Dance Studio, 375 Santa Teresa St.

The event, featuring the Paul Price Society Orchestra, raises scholarship funds for Stanford dance students.

Peninsula dance teacher Stan Isaacs will act as master of ceremonies and offer instruction in the Charleston, two-step, Castle Walk and tango between 8 and 9 p.m. At that point, the orchestra will take over and play songs from the teens and '20s for three hours.

Stanford's Dunai Folk Ensemble, under the direction of Jerry Duke, will perform during intermission.

Tickets can be ordered by calling (415) 723-1234 or by writing to Friends of Dance at Stanford, 375 Santa Teresa St., Stanford, CA 94305. Tickets also will be sold on campus in White Plaza from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 7-8 and 14-15.

Ticket cost is $20 in advance, $25 at the door, and $10 for full-time students.

To prepare for the ball, Stanford Folk Dancers will host a ragtime dance lesson by Isaacs from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 15, in Roble Gym. Admission is free with a ticket to the ball, or $2 for students and $3 general. A mix of rag and folk dancing will follow the lesson.

For both events, participants are asked to wear dance or soft-soled shoes.
