Staar reappointed to Defense Language board

STANFORD -- Richard F. Staar, Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, has been reappointed to the Board of Visitors at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, Calif. The appointment was announced by U.S. Secretary of Defense Richard Cheney.

Staar served as chairman of the Board of Visitors from 1988 to 1990. In August, members of the board will evaluate Defense Language Institute programs and submit formal recommendations.

Staar took leave of absence for public service from 1981 to 1983 as U.S. Ambassador to the Mutual and Balanced Force Reduction Negotiations in Vienna. He is editor-in-chief of the Yearbook on International Communist Affairs and author most recently of Foreign Policies of the Soviet Union (1991), both published by the Hoover Institution Press.
