Stanford students volunteer for community fix-up

STANFORD -- Sixty students from Stanford's Haas Center for Public Service plan to celebrate Bay Area and National Youth Service Day on April 27 by doing volunteer work.

The students will join the Junior League of Palo Alto's "Christmas in April" campaign, in which an estimated 1,000 volunteers will repair and renovate three dozen homes and community centers for low-income, elderly and disabled people in Menlo Park, East Palo Alto, Mountain View and Redwood City.

The Stanford contingent will work from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Hoover Elementary School in Redwood City and the Menlo Park Boys' and Girls' Club, Victoria Deise of the Haas Center said. Their chores will include carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, painting, weather-stripping, safety enhancement, landscaping and trash removal.

Bay Area Youth Service Day was organized by Stanford graduate Amy Dawson in conjunction with numerous local agencies. The national event includes more than 1,500 organizations.
