'Energy Crossroads' conference April 30 and May 1 at Stanford

A conference devoted to exploring ways to broaden the use of clean, sustainable energy will take place April 30 and May 1 at Stanford University.

Energy Crossroads, a student organization founded at Stanford that aims to reduce society's dependence on fossil fuels, is presenting the conference, "From Vision to Action: Sparking Global Change."

Cathy Zoi, chief executive officer of the Alliance for Climate Protection, a nonprofit organization founded by former vice president and Nobel laureate Al Gore, will deliver one of two keynote addresses. The other keynote speaker will be Michael Shellenberger, co-author of Break Through: From the Death of Environmentalism to the Politics of Possibility. Shellenberger has sparked controversy over the last few years by arguing that the past approaches to problems taken by the environmental movement are outdated and must be broadened if there is to be any hope of success in combating global warming.

Part of the stated mission of Energy Crossroads is to bring together policy-makers from all levels of government, as well as non-governmental organizations, and to include engineers, corporate leaders, academics and students in the effort to find workable solutions to problems of energy use.

Conference panelists will include Elizabeth "Libby" Cheney (no relation to Vice President Dick Cheney), vice president of exploration and production for Shell Americas oil company, and Prince Moulay Hicham ben Abdallah of Morocco, managing director of Al Tayyar Energy.

The conference will include a Clean Energy Expo, which will showcase sustainable energy solutions being promoted by a variety of professionals, including architects, designers, construction companies and manufacturers.
