Statement by Stanford University President John Hennessy on President Bush's proposal for an American Competitiveness Initiative

We are encouraged by the president’s leadership in recognizing the challenges the nation must address if we are to maintain our leadership in science and technology. The proposals to increase the federal commitment to basic research in the physical sciences and enhance the teaching of math and science in high school are critical in this regard. The nation’s educational leaders stand ready to work together with the executive branch, the Congress and the business community to educate a new generation of teachers and scientists who will create new knowledge, strengthen the economy and sharpen the nation’s competitive edge.
