MEDIA ADVISORY: Limited availability of press credentials for the Dalai Lama visit Nov. 4-5

Press seating and access will be extremely limited during the Nov. 4-5 visit by Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, to the Stanford campus. We regret that requests for press credentials are likely to exceed our ability to accommodate them. Print and broadcast reporters may make application for credentials to cover events by submitting in writing by 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, the information requested below.

Please note that all public appearances by the Dalai Lama will be broadcast live via an online webcast. (The URL will be linked to the website: http://dalailama.stanford.edu.) Additionally, Stanford will make available still photographs and video of events. More information about those services will be posted at http://dalailama.stanford.edu.

The Dalai Lama will make three separate public appearances at Stanford; all events are sold out:

On Friday, Nov. 4, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. the Dalai Lama will speak at a meditation and teaching event in Maples Pavilion.

On Friday, Nov. 4, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. the Dalai Lama will participate in a conversation about nonviolence in Memorial Church with the Rev. Scotty McLennan, dean for religious life. The event is sponsored by the Heyns Lecture series and the Aurora Forum.

On Saturday, Nov. 5, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (with a lunch break from noon to 1:30 p.m.) the Dalai Lama will participate in a conference, "Craving, Suffering and Choice: Spiritual and Scientific Explorations of Human Experience," with Buddhist scholars and scientists from the Stanford University Neuroscience Institute and the University of California-San Francisco. Saturday's conference, to be held at Memorial Auditorium, will be sponsored by the Stanford School of Medicine.

Applications for press credentials should specify which event(s) your news organization wishes to cover. Also, note that, for accepted applications, members of the press must submit to the News Service by 5 p.m. Oct. 24 their birthdate and Social Security number (SSN) with their signature, which will be supplied to the U.S. Department of State for required security background checks. (Stanford University will not record or retain this information and the Public Information Act and other applicable laws protect your SSN from further disclosure.) Bags will be subject to search.

Individuals who have already submitted requests for credentials to the News Service should submit an application by the Oct. 19 deadline. Fax information to Barbara Palmer, Stanford News Service, at (650) 725-0247 or e-mail to barbara.palmer@stanford.edu.
