Colombian journalist threatened with death to spend 2005-06 at Stanford

A Colombian journalist who was the target of death threats in his home country will spend the 2005-06 academic year at Stanford as a senior research fellow.

Daniel Coronell, 40, news director of Noticias Uno on the television station Canal Uno and a columnist for the weekly magazine Semana, will study with 20 other U.S. and International John S. Knight Fellows whose selection was announced earlier this year.

In April, an anonymous caller threatened to kill Coronell, his wife and daughter. In May, he received a burial wreath addressed to him at Canal Uno. A short while later, anonymous threats against Coronell were delivered via e-mail from bogus e-mail addresses. Coronell is well known for his independent and investigative reporting on political corruption, drug trafficking and Colombia's ongoing civil war.

Colombia is one of the five most murderous countries in the world for journalists, according to research by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). "Daniel Coronell's plight shows why Colombia is so dangerous for journalists. The government of President Uribe should be doing everything it can to ensure the safety of journalists such as Coronell," CPJ Executive Director Ann Cooper said. "We are relieved our colleague is safe and can pursue this professional opportunity through the Knight Fellowships."

James Bettinger, director of the Knight Fellowships program, said the presence at Stanford of journalists like Coronell provides an important perspective, reminding people about the dangers faced by journalists in many parts of the world.

The Knight Fellowships program was established as the Stanford Professional Journalism Fellowships in 1966. More than 700 journalists from the United States and other countries have been journalism fellows at Stanford.
