Two dorm intrusions reported over the weekend; one suspect arrested

By Michael Peña

University police reported two incidents of intruders gaining entrance into inner-campus undergraduate dorms over the weekend, resulting in the arrest of one suspect while the second man remains at large.

Kevin Brewer, 39, of Stockton, was arrested after allegedly following a female student into one of the women's bathrooms in Storey House on Friday night, said Deputy Ken Bates of the Stanford University Department of Public Safety. Brewer was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor peeping.

In a separate incident, a second man reportedly touched a female student while she was asleep in her dorm room in Stern Hall early Saturday morning, Bates said. The student woke up and yelled at the intruder to leave, which woke up the student's roommate, Bates added.

After one of the students threatened to call a resident assistant, the intruder fled. He was described as Hispanic, about 30 to 40 years old, standing about 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighing approximately 160 pounds, with a thick, stocky build, thin black hair, dark eyes and no facial hair or glasses.

In the Friday night incident, Bates said the student saw a man follow her into the bathroom and peek into a stall she had been occupying. The man left when she came out and confronted him, at which point the student notified a resident assistant, Bates said.

Officers received a call from the resident assistant, and shortly thereafter, a patrol car arrived and Brewer was arrested while exiting the dorm, Bates said. He added that an investigation is under way as to whether the middle-aged suspect is affiliated with the university. Brewer was booked into Santa Clara County Jail in San Jose.

The incidents have prompted a reminder to students to lock their room doors and avoid propping open house doors. The students who had been asleep apparently left their room door unlocked. The invasion was reported later that day.

Officers found no signs of forced entry at either dorm, and the incidents appear to be unrelated, Bates said. Officers also reminded resident staff and students to call police immediately when an incident occurs and, and if possible, to make contact with anyone unfamiliar they see roaming the dorms to find out why they are there.
