Psychology expert to discuss Abu Ghraib, war on terror

Philip Zimbardo, professor emeritus of psychology, will give a public lecture, "The Psychology of 'Evil' and the Politics of Fear," at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, in Kresge Auditorium. In his talk, Zimbardo will present a social psychological analysis of the abuses committed by American soldiers against prisoners in Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison. He also will discuss the psychological dimensions of the current war on terrorism. A former president of the American Psychological Association, Zimbardo conducted the 1971 Stanford Prison Experiment, which explored power dynamics and individual behavior. The lecture is sponsored by Stanford Continuing Studies and the Stanford Center on Ethics.
