Stanford and Newsweek magazine to co-host panel on presidential politics and the national security debate

The Stanford Institute for International Studies (SIIS) and Newsweek magazine will present a public discussion on the national security debate and presidential politics at noon Monday, March 1, in Encina Hall at the corner of Serra and Galvez streets. Lunch will be provided.

The event is part of Newsweek's "Road to the White House: Perspectives on National Security," an ongoing discussion forum held across the country with political and local leaders in the national and global security sector.

Coit D. Blacker, director of SIIS, will make opening remarks at the campus panel titled "How Presidential Campaign Politics in 2004 Are Shaping the Global and Domestic Security Debate." Newsweek's Washington bureau chief, Daniel Klaidman, will moderate the 90-minute discussion with the following panelists:

• U.S. Rep. Jane Harman, D-Calif., ranking Democrat on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence

• William J. Perry, former U.S. Secretary of Defense, SIIS senior fellow, professor of management science and engineering

• Stephen D. Krasner, deputy director of SIIS, professor of political science

• Michael Isikoff, Newsweek investigative correspondent and co-author of "Terror Watch," a Newsweek.com column.
