Concert to celebrate Daniel Pearl the musician

Daniel Pearl, the Wall Street Journal reporter and Stanford graduate who was executed by terrorists in Pakistan earlier this year, will be honored with a concert at 8 p.m. Oct. 10 in Memorial Church on the Stanford campus.

Pearl was not only a dedicated journalist but also an avid violinist who played in bands, orchestras and chamber groups wherever he lived. He graduated from Stanford in 1985 with a degree in communications.

The Daniel Pearl Foundation has decided to celebrate his birthday, Oct. 10, as a day of music-making worldwide. Friends and others who did not know him are participating in musical events from Los Angeles to London to Mumbai to celebrate Pearl's commitment to promoting global harmony and cross-cultural understanding through music as well as journalism.

The concert at Stanford will feature the St. Lawrence String Quartet and jazz pianist Mark Applebaum. It will include works by Mozart, R Murray Shafer and Applebaum.

The evening is free and open to the public.
