A wooden cart loaded with organic fruits and vegetables – apples and grapes, lettuce and cauliflower – is the first thing shoppers see when they walk into the new grocery and convenience store in the Munger Graduate Residence.
Just beyond the cart is a display of freshly baked breads.
But it's the Berto's Gelato and Sorbet stand – 12 flavors to choose from – that has been the top attraction so far in The Market at Munger.
The market, which opened last week, is located in the lobby of Building 5 of the new Munger Graduate Residence. The recently completed complex has five apartment buildings; some 600 law students and graduate students now live there.
The market offers something for almost every taste and craving: organic, kosher, gluten-free and vegetarian, and fresh, canned, packaged and frozen items.
International students and the people who love their cuisines will find a variety of specialty items. The market sells mixes for Punjab eggplant and Bengal lentils. It sells sushi wraps – rice, seaweed wraps and soy sauce. It stocks sauces for Korean barbeque, Chinese stir fry and pad Thai. It sells mango chutney, salsas and wasabi. The market stocks Japanese udon and soba noodles.
There are snack foods galore: salty, sweet, crunchy, creamy and chewy.
The market does not sell alcohol, but does stock a variety of beverages. It also sells a small selection of vitamins, over-the-counter medicines, and health, personal-care and household products.
The store is offering tastings of selected specialty items from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. through Oct. 2.
The market is located at 554 Salvatierra Walk, next to the Haas Center for Public Service. It is open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Friday.
A café is expected to open in Building 4 of the Munger complex in October. The buildings are located on the southeast side of campus, between the Law School and Campus Drive East.
The complex was named in honor of Charles T. Munger, vice chair of Berkshire Hathaway, a conglomerate holding company, and his wife, Nancy B. Munger, '45, a former Stanford University trustee. In 2004, the couple donated $43.5 million toward the project – the largest gift ever earmarked for university housing at Stanford.
