BIANXIAO CUI, assistant professor of chemistry, has been selected as a 2009 Searle Scholar. Cui's research focuses on understanding signal propagation in neurons by using techniques that allow stimulation and observation of individual molecules in live cells. The scholarship program, begun in 1981, looks for young biomedical scientists who have already done important, innovative research and who have the potential for making significant contributions to biological research over an extended period of time. The award includes a one-time grant of $300,000 for the support of her research over three years. Each year 15 scholars are chosen.
