Department of Neurosurgery receives federal training grant

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke has awarded a grant totaling an anticipated $350,000 over the next five years to members of the neurosurgery department.

Griff Harsh, MD, professor of neurosurgery and director of the neurosurgery residency program, is the principal investigator and program director for the grant, which will be used to fund a project called the Stanford Neurosurgery Resident Research Education Program. He will oversee the program, with review by Gary Steinberg, MD, PhD, chair of neurosurgery.

The new program aims to provide education in basic, translational and clinical research to neurosurgery residents so that they can become clinician-scientists who will be leaders in academic neurosurgery. Under the mentorship of senior medical-school faculty researchers, residents will perform hands-on research in individual laboratories, while being encouraged to collaborate with others in different laboratories.
