Annual zoned flushing of campus water system to begin

Produced by Maps and Records

The Stanford Water Department will conduct its annual flushing of the university's water distribution system from Feb. 17 through March 6. During that time, fire hydrants will be opened to flush out sediment that has collected in the mains during the past year.

The flushing, a standard operating procedure for water departments, may cause slight but temporary reduction in water pressure and possible discoloration. However, the department assures that the water will remain safe for drinking.

The department also suggests users refrain from doing projects that may be affected by temporary sediments in the water while the lines are being flushed.

The schedule for flushing follows (see map):

Zone 1 (residential area—south of Campus Drive East and Mayfield Avenue): starts Tuesday, Feb. 17, and ends Thursday, Feb. 19; nightly from 7 to 11 p.m.

Zone 2 (central campus and academic areas—approximately within Campus Drive loop, additionally north to Sand Hill Road and between Bowdoin Street and Mayfield Avenue): starts Monday, Feb. 23, and ends Friday, Feb. 27; nightly from 7 to 11 p.m.

Zone 3 (area east of Campus Drive East, north of Bowdoin Street and east of Serra Street boundary): starts Wednesday, March 4, and ends Friday, March 6; daily from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
