Registration is now open for two intramural sports competitions that faculty and staff are invited to take part in. The first is a swim meet at the Avery Aquatic Center on Friday, April 17, at 7 p.m. Events that swimmers may sign up for include the 400-yard freestyle team relay; 200-yard and 50-yard individual races in freestyle, butterfly, backstroke and breaststroke; and 100-yard individual medley and freestyle. Then at noon on Friday, May 1, the intramural sports staff will hold its third annual four-on-four volleyball tournament. Teams can have up to six players, and in addition to playing in sand, this year games also will be played on grass courts. More than 30 teams have competed in the Sand Volleyball Classic over the last two years. The deadline for registration is April 30 at noon. For the swim meet, now in its second year, signups will be taken until noon on April 16. Go to http://www.stanford.edu/dept/pe/intramurals/ for more information, including an embedded YouTube video of the inaugural swim meet.
Now if you go directly to YouTube and search for "Burnham Brawl III," it will pull up a handful of videos of Muay Thai kickboxers whaling away at each other in a dark venue with the sounds of traditional music playing in the background. But don't worry: The bouts took place at Stanford, and as in past Burnham Brawls, the matches were carefully refereed. Now in its third year, the Stanford Muay Thai event was held last Friday night in Burnham Pavilion. About 100 people attended, and Thai food was served at no additional cost. For more information about the Stanford Muay Thai club or kickboxing classes on campus, go to http://kickboxing.stanford.edu.
For something a little more mellow, drop by the CoHo tomorrow night, when DAVID HARRINGTON—co-founder and violinist of the Kronos Quartet—will mix CDs from his personal collection. In addition to adventurous chamber music, Harrington will blend pop and folk songs, as well as works from around the world. Billed as the David Harrington DeeJay Session, presented by Stanford Lively Arts, the free listening party begins at 9 p.m.
