An Art Affair, the university's biggest arts festival, kicks off tomorrow and runs through Saturday. The event is free and open to the public and will feature more than 90 student visual artists and photographers, along with more than 50 performances by music, dance and theater groups from Stanford. Now in its 10th year, the festival will once again fill White Plaza with art tents, concert stages and evening parties featuring food that will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis. There will be a DJ dessert party on Thursday night, and a free dinner for up to 400 people on Friday night. Then on Saturday, more than two dozen performances will take place on two stages between noon and 6 p.m. The festival is presented by the Student Organizing Committee for the Arts. For the full schedule and more details, go to http://soca.stanford.edu.
April 22 is Earth Day, and on the following day at noon, Health Improvement Program instructor JANE ROTHSTEIN will teach a class with the coordinators of the bicycle and Commute Club programs for Parking and Transportation Services (P&TS). The class, to be held in Conference Room H of the P&TS office at Bonair Siding, aims to help individuals overcome barriers to using alternative transportation. Rothstein is HIP's "environmental behavior change coordinator" and points to the benefits of getting more exercise and cleaner air as reasons enough to leave the car at home. To register for the one-hour class, go to http://hip.stanford.edu or call 723-9649. The cost is $10 and STAP funds may be used.
Then on April 29, the Asian Staff Forum will host the Big Lunch of Color, from noon to 1 p.m. in Tresidder Union's Oak Lounge. President JOHN HENNESSY will be on hand to help kick off Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month and take questions from the audience. All members of the Stanford community are invited, and anyone who can volunteer to assist with the event—setup, serving lunch or cleanup—should e-mail HIU HO at hiu@stanford.edu. The Asian American Students Association is co-sponsoring, and entertainment will include a performance by a student group. RSVP by April 20 to STUART MIYASATO at miyasato@stanford.edu. Any questions for President Hennessy should be included in the RSVP.
