SHELLEY FISHER FISHKIN, a professor of English and director of the American Studies Program, has been appointed to a five-year term on the Board of Governors of the University of California Humanities Research Institute—that is, the board for all the humanities centers in the 10-campus UC system. The president of the UC system made the appointment in July. The institute promotes collaborative work representing different fields and institutions within and beyond the University of California—a good match for Fishkin's broad, interdisciplinary research interests.

JOSEPH KELLER, the Lewis M. Terman Professor of Mathematics, Emeritus, and professor emeritus of mechanical engineering, has been awarded, along with five colleagues, the 2008 Excellence in Geophysical Education Award, given by the American Geophysical Union. The award recognizes the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Program, which Keller and his colleagues have run for 50 years at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Woods Hole, Mass. The award is for "a sustained commitment to excellence in geophysical education."

UMRAN INAN, professor of electrical engineering, has been awarded the Appleton Prize for outstanding contributions to the field of ionospheric physics. The prize is awarded every three years by the International Radio Science Union (URSI) and is presented by the Council of the Royal Society of London. Inan has contributed to the understanding of whistler-mode wave-particle interaction in near-Earth space, and the electrodynamic coupling between lighting discharges and the upper atmosphere. Inan is one of five URSI award recipients this year.
