AKSHAY VENKATESH, professor of mathematics, has won the $10,000 Ramanujan Prize, given by the Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology, Research Academy in India. The annual prize is given for outstanding contributions to areas of mathematics influenced by the famous Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. Winners must be no older than 32, Ramanujan's age when he died. Venkatesh came to Stanford last month from New York University. Kannan Soundararajan, professor of mathematics, was a joint recipient of the inaugural prize in 2005.
