Faculty senate discusses altruism, respect, justice
The School of Medicine Faculty Senate will meet today to discuss how the school's curriculum can incorporate teaching of professional values, such as altruism, respect and justice. The discussion will be led by Clarence Braddock, MD, who has chaired a medical center task force on the issue.
Braddock said there has been a national movement in recent years to help ensure professional conduct and values in medical practice. He said Stanford is looking at how it could train students in professionalism and how it could evaluate students, residents and practicing physicians in this area. The school is also looking into ways to acknowledge trainees and practicing physicians who show exemplary behavior, he said.
At its meeting, the senate will also hold a town hall forum with Philip Pizzo, MD, the medical school dean. He will lead a free-ranging discussion on items of interest to senate members and other attendees.
The meeting will be held at 5:15 p.m. in conference room 303 in the Medical School Office Building.
