VA grant strengthens rehabilitation center

Patients ranging from wounded soldiers to elderly veterans can face significant pain and disability resulting from skeletal problems with causes that are poorly understood. A new five-year, $4.4 million grant from the Veterans Administration will help faculty at the VA Palo Alto Research and Development Center of Excellence on Bone and Joint Rehabilitation advance basic knowledge and ultimately improve patient health.

The VA is also beginning a three-year, $17 million retrofitting and expansion project for the center's building, said center director Christopher Jacobs, PhD, associate professor of mechanical engineering and of orthopedic surgery.

The center, founded in 1978 with a focus on assistive technology, has more recently focused on musculoskeletal ailments, including osteoporosis and osteoarthritis.
