Medical student wins award to fight blindness
Second-year Stanford medical student Jennifer Staple has received a 2007 BRICK Award, which honors young people under the age of 25 who have helped change the world. CNN has dubbed the BRICK Awards "the Oscars of youth service awards."
Staple's award provides $10,000 to Unite For Sight, the nonprofit organization she started six years ago to eradicate preventable blindness worldwide. The awards are made by Do Something, a not-for-profit that has corporate sponsors.
Staple joined 23 other finalists on Jan. 19 in New York City to interview for the awards and for a special presentation by actress Susan Sarandon, a partner and supporter of the BRICK Awards. She was one of 12 young adults selected to receive the award.
Staple is also eligible for an additional $15,000 Golden BRICK Award for Unite For Sight. In an online voting contest on Yahoo, the public is invited to vote for the winner at www.brickawards.com. "We hope that many will vote online to support Unite for Sight," Staple said.
The winners of the Golden BRICK Award will be announced April 10 at a ceremony in Times Square in New York City.
