$1 million autism grant will benefit Hallmayer
Joachim Hallmayer, MD, associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, is one of the beneficiaries of a $1 million grant from The Hilibrand Foundation to the international Autism Genome Project. AGP is a public/private partnership uniting the world's leading autism researchers.
The grant from the Hilibrand Foundation will help AGP researchers worldwide identify genes associated with autism spectrum disorders—one of today's fastest growing neurodevelopmental disabilities.
Hallmayer is a member of the AGP steering committee and chair of the project's executive committee. He is co-author of a new paper in Nature Genetics about recent AGP research.
"My husband and I have watched the progress being made by the AGP over the last three years, and in making this gift we want to enable researchers to take full advantage of the latest genotyping technology in their quest to find the genes associated with autism," said Deborah Hilibrand of The Hilibrand Foundation.
She and Lawrence Hilibrand began actively supporting autism research and treatment efforts after their son was diagnosed with autism.
