James Chang, MD, associate professor of surgery (plastic surgery) and, by courtesy, of orthopedic surgery and chief of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, has been awarded the American Society for Surgery of the Hand Sterling Bunnell Traveling Fellowship in Hand Surgery. He will focus on worldwide progress in tissue engineering research toward translation into techniques and materials for reconstruction of the hand.
James Huddleston, MD, has been named assistant professor of orthopedic surgery as of Oct. 1. His research involves evaluating osteolysis and monitoring activity and motion after joint replacement.
Henry Hsia, MD, has been appointed associate professor of medicine (cardiovascular) as of Oct. 1. His research focuses on the mechanisms of ventricular tachycardias in the setting of structural heart disease. Hsia is interested in the spatial relationship between the electrophysiological components of the arrhythmia circuit and the characteristics of the abnormal myocardium.
Seung Kim, MD, PhD, has been promoted to associate professor of developmental biology and, by courtesy, of medicine (oncology), as of Oct. 1. His research focuses on the mechanisms governing pancreatic islet growth and cell differentiation and function, which may lead to therapies to foster islet growth and regeneration in diabetes patients.
Nishita Kothary, MD, has been appointed assistant professor of radiology, as of Sept. 1. Her research interests include women's health and interventional oncology, including gastrointestinal, lung and gynecologic oncology. She is a member of Women's Health @ Stanford, and is also education and fellowship director of the interventional radiology program.
Marlene Rabinovitch, MD, the Dwight and Vera Dunlevie Professor in Pediatric Cardiology, is scheduled to receive this year's American Heart Association Distinguished Scientist Award at the group's annual meeting on Nov. 12. Her research focuses on the regulation of genes associated with cardiovascular development and disease. Rabinovitch is also director of research at the Vera Moulton Wall Center for Pulmonary Vascular Disease at Stanford.
Irving Weissman, MD, the Virginia and D.K. Ludwig Professor for Clinical Investigation and director of the Stanford Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine, was named this year's winner of the John Scott Award, given by the City Trusts of Philadelphia. The award recognizes "the most deserving" men and women whose inventions have contributed in some outstanding way to the "comfort, welfare and happiness" of mankind. Weissman is also the recipient of the American-Italian Cancer Foundation's prize for Scientific Excellence in Medicine, being presented this month in New York.
Paul Yock, MD, the Martha Meier Weiland Professor in the School of Medicine and professor of bioengineering, is the winner of the Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics Career Achievement Award, from the Cardiovascular Research Foundation. His research interests include device development and testing in interventional cardiology. He is also co-chair of the Department of Bioengineering and director of the Stanford Program in Biodesign.
