Mahood, Horowitz are helping to lead graduate education
Vice Provost for Graduate Education Patricia J. Gumport has announced that Gail Mahood will serve as associate vice provost for graduate education and Mark Horowitz will serve as associate vice provost for special programs through the end of the academic year.
Mahood and Horowitz have been leading several initiatives that are already under way. Horowitz has been facilitating innovative courses that develop interdisciplinary expertise for graduate students. Mahood has been working on several fronts in the areas of graduate student diversity, funding and tuition structures, and data collection for the next round of the National Research Council's ranking of graduate programs. She is scheduled to talk about her work Nov. 30 at the Faculty Senate meeting. (Horowitz spoke at the Nov. 9 senate meeting.)
Gumport, who will begin her post in January 2007, said she is delighted that Mahood and Horowitz will "continue the momentum in these initiatives for this critical transition year."
"Stanford is very fortunate that we can continue to draw on their expertise and insights," Gumport said. "I look forward to learning from them and building on their valuable contributions as we all work together to formalize the priorities, staffing structure and activities for the new Office of the Vice Provost for Graduate Education."
Both associate vice provosts expressed excitement about working with Gumport on the initiatives in their respective areas.
"I am pleased that Patti has agreed to become the vice provost," Horowitz said. "I look forward to working with her to help implement the recommendations of the Commission on Graduate Education."
"Professor Gumport brings research expertise in higher education to a process that most of us dabble in as amateurs," Mahood said. "It will be particularly enjoyable to help her think through how the office can improve the educational experience of graduate students."
