The Stanford Management Company has announced the appointment of Eric Upin to chief investment officer and managing director of SMC's public equity portfolio. Upin joined the company in February 2005, after 13 years on Wall Street as a senior institutional equity research analyst covering enterprise software, business services and other technology sectors.

From 2002 to 2004, Upin was the director of technology research at Wells Fargo Securities, and from 1993 to 2002, he was a senior partner and managing director in equity research at Robertson Stephens, a prominent investment-banking boutique. Previously, Upin spent four years at the management consulting firm Booz Allen & Hamilton in a variety of industries and roles.

Upin received a bachelor's degree in economics in 1983 from Washington University in St. Louis and an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1989. Prior to business school, Upin played key roles in two technology-related startups.

"Eric Upin has guided the Management Company through a period of transition," said John Powers, SMC's president and chief executive officer. "The CIO title acknowledges his leadership and investment insight."

The Stanford Management Company was established in 1991 as a separate university division and currently manages more than $17 billion in financial assets.
