Colloquium to address academic journal pricing and publication
On Monday, Nov. 6, Stanford University Libraries and Academic Information Resources (SULAIR) will host a daylong Scholarly Communications Colloquium as a forum for discussing current issues in scholarly publishing, including journal pricing, and to provide information to faculty and graduate students about publishing research.
In response to the skyrocketing costs of journals, in 2004 the Faculty Senate passed a resolution that encouraged faculty to consider journal pricing as well as reputation when considering where to publish or serve on editorial boards.
Speakers at the Nov. 6 colloquium will include economist Ted Bergstrom of the University of California-Santa Barbara, who will talk about the economics of scholarly publishing. Doug Brutlag, professor of biochemistry and the author of the Faculty Senate resolution, will report on Stanford's reaction to the serials crisis.
The colloquium also will present a panel discussion with the publishers of academic journals and a panel of Stanford authors and editors. Mia Garlick, general counsel for Creative Commons, will discuss licensing options for authors, and John Willinsky of the University of British Columbia will present information about open access journals.
The colloquium, to be held at McCaw Hall in the Arrillaga Alumni Center, is open to Stanford faculty, staff, and postdoctoral and graduate students. Participants are asked to register online for the free event at http://library.stanford.edu/scholarly_com/colloquium.
More information also is available online on the Scholarly Communication and Publishing Issues website, http://sulair.stanford.edu/scholarly_com/index.html.
