LUCIUS J. BARKER, the William Bennett Munro Professor of Political Science, Emeritus, has been honored by the Midwest Political Science Association with the creation of an award in his name. Established in 2005, the Lucius Barker Award "is for the best paper presented at the annual meeting on a topic investigating race or ethnicity and politics honoring the spirit and work of Professor Barker." Professor James Gibson of Washington University in St. Louis is the first recipient of the award for his paper, presented at the association's 2005 annual meeting, titled "Overcoming Land Injustices: An Experimental Investigation into the Justice and Injustice of Land Squatting in South Africa." The award was made last month at the association's national conference in Chicago.
LAWRENCE BOBO, the Martin Luther King Jr. Centennial Professor, is one of 11 artists and scholars to be named 2006 Alphonse Fletcher Sr. Fellows. The Fletcher fellowships were created in 2004 by businessman Alphonse Fletcher Jr. to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Supreme Court's Brown v. Board of Education decision. Fellows are awarded a stipend of $50,000 for work that contributes to improving race relations in the United States. Bobo, professor of sociology and director of the Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity, received funding for the project "Unfair by Design: Black and White Americans View the New Law and Order Regime."
SCOTT KLEMMER, assistant professor of computer science, was named a Microsoft Research New Faculty Fellow by Microsoft Research on April 26 in Redmond, Wash. The $200,000 award honors professors who "demonstrate the drive and creativity to develop original research while continually advancing the state of the art of computing." Klemmer was recognized for his research on human-computer interaction to help bridge the divide between physical and digital worlds.
