Atul Butte MD, PhD, assistant professor of medicine and of pediatrics, was appointed to the NIH Biomedical Computing and Health Informatics Study Section, Center for Scientific Review. As a member, he will review grant applications.
Myriam Curet, MD, associate professor of surgery, was the recipient of the 2006 Outstanding Teaching Award, presented by the Association for Surgical Education at its annual meeting in Tucson in March. In addition to teaching, she studies surgical education, laparoscopic surgery, bariatric surgery and robotic surgery.
Peter P. Lee, MD, assistant professor of medicine, and jonathan pollack, MD, PhD, assistant professor of pathology, have been inducted into the American Society for Clinical Investigation for their scholarly achievements in biomedical research. Lee's research focuses on understanding the biology of the immune response to cancer, while Pollack's lab is working with DNA microarrays to characterize the molecular makeup of tumor cells, with current efforts in leukemia, breast, prostate, lung, colon and pancreatic cancers.
David Stevenson, MD, the Harold K. Faber Professor of Pediatrics and professor, by courtesy, of obstetrics and gynecology, is the recipient of the Virginia Apgar Award. The Section on Perinatal Pediatrics of the American Academy of Pediatrics gives this award annually to an individual whose career has had a continuing influence on the well- being of newborn infants. His research focuses on neonatology, particularly neonatal jaundice. Stevenson also serves as vice dean and senior associate dean for academic affairs.
