Events to honor Norman Shumway

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Norman Shumway, MD, PhD, the pioneering heart surgeon who died Feb. 10 at the age of 83, will be held March 17 at Memorial Church. He is widely known for his years of successful work to make heart transplantation a viable procedure.

The service starts at 3 p.m., with a reception at the Faculty Club to follow. The family asks that donations be made to the Stanford Heart and Lung Transplant Patient Care Fund, Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, 300 Pasteur Drive, Stanford, CA 94304-5407.

Additionally, the Department of Surgery will hold a grand rounds session March 21, "Remembering Norman." It begins at 7 a.m. in the Clark Center auditorium. Presenters include Spyros Andreopoulous, director emeritus of the Office of Communication & Public Affairs; Robert Chase, MD, professor emeritus of surgery, and James Mark, MD, professor emeritus of cardiothoracic surgery.
