It seems soccer fans at Stanford have reached their goal. The Seven Fifty Pub in the Graduate Community Center will show the first match of the 2006 FIFA World Cup on Friday at 9 a.m. Student fans gathered more than 650 signatures by petition in just two days, which was enough to convince pub operators GIUSEPPE and MAURIZIO CARRUBBA to show the games on their sleek plasma screen—including the ones that kick off at 6 a.m. A World Cup planning committee headed by YOSEM E. COMPANYS, a doctoral student in the Management Science and Engineering Department, is helping the pub pump people up by spreading the word and, perhaps, offering prizes for the wildest costume and bringing in the biggest group of fans. Spectators are asked to support the pub, at 750 Escondido Road, by buying food and beverages there. If crowds continue to come, the pub will show the entire tournament.

Student Housing has offered to provide a location on campus for people to pick up fresh produce grown by a local farmer as part of an emerging business arrangement known as community-assisted agriculture. It is a direct partnership between the consumer and the grower—in this case, Watsonville-based Two Small Farms—and the weekly pick-up will be in Escondido Village, off of Comstock Circle and Escondido Road. Service will begin once enough people sign up. Two Small Farms offers a four-week trial to new participants, while ongoing members can pay for the whole growing cycle up front or in nine-week intervals. All the produce is organically grown and delivered weekly to local drop-off sites, where members pick up their share of the harvest.
