LaVera Crawley, MD, has been appointed assistant professor (research) of pediatrics as of June 1. She is currently studying perceived discrimination and differential trust in health care among ethnic populations and its effect on health behaviors. She is a member of the Stanford Center for Biomedical Ethics.
Sanjiv Sam Gambhir, MD, PhD, professor of radiology, is the recipient of the Society of Nuclear Medicine's 2006 Paul C. Aebersold Award for outstanding achievement. His research seeks to identify and manipulate molecules that can be used to image in vivo biological processes, such as cancer and cardiovascular disease. He is director of the molecular imaging program, as well as head of the nuclear medicine division.
Evaleen Jones, MD, clinical assistant professor of medicine, is the recipient of the 2006 Distinguished Achievement Award presented by the Virginia Tech Alumni Association at the school's May 12 commencement. The award was given to Jones for her work with underserved populations.
Douglas Owens, MD, has been promoted to professor of medicine as of June 1. He is currently studying technology assessment and the application of decision theory to clinical/health policy problems. Owens directs the Stanford/UCSF Evidence-based Practice Center; the VA Palo Alto's Ambulatory Care Fellowship Program and the VA's Postdoctoral Informatics Program. He also serves as associate director of the fellowship program in health research and policy at Stanford.
Philip Sunshine, MD, the Harold K. Faber Professor of Pediatrics, Emeritus, received May 25 the 2006 Silver and Gold Award given by the University of Colorado Medical Alumni Association. The award is the highest recognition bestowed by the association for professional achievement and community service. Sunshine, a graduate of the University of Colorado School of Medicine, is one of the founding fathers of modern neonatology. He had served as chief of Stanford's neonatology division and continues to be called to active duty in the intensive care nurseries.
