Interim Dean of Student Affairs Greg Boardman has been promoted to the position of vice provost for student affairs, Provost John Etchemendy announced Tuesday.

Boardman began his tenure at Stanford as dean of students in February 2004. He has been serving as interim dean of student affairs since February 2005.

In making the announcement, Etchemendy noted Boardman's performance as interim dean and praised his experience and skill in working with students and staff.

"In the last year Greg has shown capacity for leadership of the student affairs organization as well as a good understanding of the Stanford community," Etchemendy said. "That knowledge, paired with more than 25 years of experience in the area of student affairs, makes him an ideal fit for this critical role. I am particularly grateful for the work Greg did earlier this fall to ease the transition for our guest students from schools affected by Hurricane Katrina."

Boardman came to Stanford from Tulane University, where he was associate vice president for student affairs. He was appointed interim dean of student affairs following the departure of Vice Provost for Student Affairs Gene Awakuni to become chancellor of the University of Hawai'i-West O'ahu.

"I am truly honored and delighted to have this opportunity to serve Stanford as vice provost for student affairs," Boardman said. "I remain dedicated and committed to enhancing student life and strengthening the campus community, and at the same time facilitating a campus culture that supports individual differences. Building on this past year, I want to continue collaborating with colleagues and faculty across campus and especially look forward to working with the wonderful staff in student affairs."

The vice provost for student affairs oversees an array of offices that are central to the lives of Stanford students, among them Residential Education, the Career Development Center, Vaden Health Center, the Registrar's Office, the Office of Accessible Education, the Graduate Life Office, the Haas Center for Public Service, the community centers, the Office of Student Activities, Judicial Affairs, Bechtel International Center and the student unions.

Boardman will assume his new responsibilities immediately.
