Jonathan S. Berek

Richard Hoppe

Jonathan S. Berek, MD, has been appointed professor of obstetrics and gynecology, as of July 1. He is chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, as well as chief of the Division of Gynecologic Specialties. He previously was chief of the gynecologic oncology division at UCLA.

Vinod Bhutani, MD, has been appointed professor of pediatrics (neonatology) at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, as of July 1. His research interests focus on newborn jaundice, bilirubin biology and kernicterus prevention, pulmonary functions and neonatal ventilation.

Janice "Wes" Brown, MD, has been promoted to associate professor of medicine (bone marrow transplantation), as of Aug. 1. Her research focuses on the enhancement of immune reconstitution following hematopoeitic cell transplantation and the mitigation of radiation-induced gastrointestinal injury. She also works on a variety of novel agents and vaccines to reduce infection-related complications of cancer therapy.

Anthony De Tomaso, PhD, has been appointed assistant professor (research) of biological sciences and of pathology, as of July 1. His research on sea squirts provides insights into the evolution of our immune system and how we might better control some aspects of our immune system.

Christopher Hayward, MD, has been promoted to professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, as of Aug. 1. His research focuses on the emergence of internalizing disorders during adolescence. He also studies risk factors for the onset of adolescent panic and social anxiety disorders. He serves as associate director of the Stanford Center on Adolescence.

Richard Hoppe, MD, the Henry S. Kaplan-Harry Lebeson Professor of Cancer Biology, will receive the 2006 gold medal from the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, which is the organization's highest honor. Hoppe was chosen for helping to implement progressive radiation therapy techniques; supporting research and education, and cultivating successful Hodgkin's disease and other lymphoma treatments.

Paul J. Keall, PhD, has been appointed associate professor of radiation oncology, as of July 1. His research interests include 4-D imaging, image-guided radiotherapy, advanced dose calculation and biological models of radiation. He is also director of the radiation physics division.
