Stanford Medicine wins highest honor

Stanford Medicine magazine has won the top honor in the major U.S. award program for medical school publications. The Association of American Medical Colleges' panel of judges ranked Stanford's periodical highest among the 21 entrants in the magazine category, granting it the Award of Excellence.

The competition chair, Tom Fortner, praised the magazine at the AAMC award ceremony in Austin, Texas, last month: "Our institutions produce many outstanding alumni magazines. But at least for this year, Stanford Medicine was in a class by itself.

"It breaks the mold of the typical college magazine, presenting a compelling read for any serious student of health and medicine, regardless of their affiliation with Stanford," added Fortner, who then quoted what one judge had to say about the magazines that had been submitted: "Excellent, superb, tremendous. What all similar publications should aspire to."

The panel also recognized the magazines of the University of Vermont College of Medicine and Dartmouth Medical School/Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, with Awards of Distinction.

Stanford Medicine is produced by the medical school's Office of Communication & Public Affairs, led by Paul Costello. The office's director of print and web communications is Susan Ipaktchian. The magazine's editor is Rosanne Spector.
