Honors & Awards
Harry J. Elam Jr., the Olive H. Palmer Professor in Humanities, the Robert and Ruth Halperin University Fellow in Undergraduate Education, professor of drama, director of the Institute for Diversity in the Arts and director of the Committee on Black Performing Arts, will be invested as a Fellow of the American Theatre by the College of Fellows of American Theatre during ceremonies at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., on April 23. The College was organized in 1965 to promote and encourage the highest standards of research and creativity in educational and professional theater by recognizing distinguished service and accomplishment by individuals of national stature. Fellows hold the honorary designation for life.
BRADFORD PARKINSON, the Edward C. Wells Professor in the School of Engineering, Emeritus, will receive the prestigious Goddard Astronautics Award on April 25 in Washington, D.C. The highest honor that the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics presents, the award commemorates Robert H. Goddard, a pioneer in the development of astronautics. Parkinson is noted for his role as the principal advocate and chief architect of the Global Positioning System (GPS). Parkinson's work led to the development, testing and eventual success of GPS, which has had a significant influence on society.
